What is it? Volvo has unveiled the concept version of the upcoming, all-new S60. Due to arrive in 2010, the S60 will have more aggressive styling with coupe-inspired lines. Beyond the styling, there is a key story under the hood, home to a new 1.6-liter direct-injection engine producing 180 hp. The small-displacement engine aims to reduce CO2 emissions and boost fuel economy, compared with today's larger six-cylinder engine. It's aided by an economy mode that limits select electrical or mechanical systems, electric power-assisted steering, powershift, and a start/stop switch, which automatically turns off the engine at idle.
What's new or notable? Volvo will also introduce a new safety feature on the S60 which detects a pedestrian who steps out into the path of a car. If the driver doesn't react, the system automatically appplies full braking power.
When will it be available? Later in 2009.
